Wycombe Wanderers vs Bristol Rovers live: Updates and reaction from Adams ParkBristol Rovers suffered just their second League One defeat in 13 games on Boxing Day, losing 2-1 to Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park. Josh Coburn rounded off a fine team move to give Joey Barton’s side a dream start in Buckinghamshire and the Gas looked good value to extend their lead with a dominant opening.
But a softly-conceded equaliser to David Wheeler midway through the first half knocked Rovers out of their stride and after the interval, they were unable to reach the same levels of performance, with Lewis Wing scoring what proved to be the winner within three minutes of the restart. The Gas searched for an equaliser, but Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe have mastered the art of defending leads and bleeding the clock, with title-chasing Ipswich Town suffering the same fate at Adams Park the week previously, and the Chairboys managed the closing stages to clinch a victory that lifted them to sixth in the table. Rovers dropped to 10th as a result, but Barton, his players and his supporters remained upbeat despite the result, with the majority of the 1, 203 travelling Gasheads staying behind to applaud their team and vent a few choice words at Sunny Gill, who irked both sides with his inconsistent officiating. But it was Rovers who were the authors of their own demise, failing to capitalise on a flying start and succumbing to the obvious physical threats that Wycombe posed.
The game was evenly poised going into the second half, but it quickly swung in Wycombe’s favour when Wing squeezed a shot through a crowd of bodies at the near post three minutes after the break. The celebrations were delayed briefly with questions about whether the ball had crossed the line and offside, with a Wycombe player on the line and in the path of the shot when it went in, but the assistant raised his flag and awarded the goal. Rovers were well aware of the difficulties associated with playing from behind against this particular opponent and the closing stages proved to be frustrating as the quality and patience of their approach play waned. Substitute Luke McCormick created Rovers’ best moments in the second half, but he saw two shots saved by Stryjek late on before Mr Gill called time to proceedings.
